Cost Of Education in New Zealand

Studying in New Zealand is very affordable in comparison to other countries, the costs vary depending on the course but even the most expensive ones are fairly priced. While heavily dependent on the course an international undergraduate student’s expected expenditure is between 20,000 to 35,000 NZ$ with prices climbing up to 75,000N Z$ in case of courses like medicine and veterinary science.

Accommodation Cost and Options

Across the various cities like Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin and others you can find that the education institutes are well distributed along with diverse weather patterns. Most universities provide affordable on-campus accommodation known as the Halls of Residence to International students which need to be applied separately and prior to your arrival in order to book a slot.

Regular off-campus accommodations like apartments, homestay, hostels, shared and private flats are available in all cities leaving only the price and climate to consider for the students. With a predominantly temperate maritime (type of oceanic climate with generally mild summers and cool but not cold winters) climate New Zealand is pleasant to live throughout the year but some specific features like the lack of rainfall in Christchurch, the colder southern regions and Wellington being the wettest city in New Zealand can sway student’s decisions. After covering your tuition, insurance, visa and travel fees it is mandatory for international students to show proof of at least 15,000 NZ$ for a year or 1,250 NZ$ for a month to cover living and other daily expenses.

Language Proficiency

Proof of English Language proficiency is a requirement to study in New Zealand and it is advised that students take one of the reputed international English tests like IELTS, TOFEL or PTE. Although, English is the widely spoken language in New Zealand the unique accent of the local people might take some time getting used to.

New Zealand Visa Requirements

In order to study full time course in New Zealand you will need a student visa but in case of a course shorter than 3 months students can study with just a visit Visa. While the entire process can be simplified with the guidance of experts here are some requirements.

  • Proof of proficiency in English language

  • A valid passport and photograph in requested format.

  • Offer letter and Letter of acceptance from a New Zealand Qualifications Committee approved education provider.

  • Visa application fee payment

  • Adequate proof of funds for the duration of study (mandatory 15,000 for a year or 1,250 per month living expense)

  • Guaranteed accommodation from an institution or individual for the whole duration in New Zealand is required for international students under 18.

  • Medical reports and police certificates

  • Health insurance cover for the entire duration

It is a mandatory requirement to have your health covered through either the public healthcare system (heavily subsidized by the New Zealand government) or through private healthcare systems. Additionally, it is beneficial to purchase health cover during the visa application process or at the very least provide assurance of health cover purchase on immediate arrival at New Zealand.
